Apple has developed a licensing program called Made for iPhone/iPod/iPad, for short—Apple MFi Program.

It is aimed at the developers of hardware and software peripherals that work with Apple's iPod, iPad, and iPhone.

MFi (Made for iPod) certification goes back to 2005. It started as a way to ensure that iPods would work with all accessories and chargers.

Apple charges manufacturers for running their iPad and iPhone accessories (such as Lightning cables, Bluetooth controllers, and so on) through compliance and safety tests.

If the tests are successfully completed, the developers gain a “Made for iPhone” badge on their product package.
